the elder chief of a tribe died, a young man who had studied at a modern university took over the chieftainship with other young men. A few months later, when autumn came, the tribe members came to him and asked, "Chief, will the next winter be like a normal winter or will there be more snow?" Now, this young man did not have the wisdom of the ancient elders who could tell what kind of weather was coming by looking at the sky and the ground. He had studied at the city university. He thought that if he said that it would be a normal winter and there would be more snow, the tribe would be killed. Therefore, out of caution, he said that it would be a bit cold, collect firewood. The young men of the tribe insisted on collecting firewood.
The chief was restless for a week. The life of the tribe depended on his decision and he had made a decision with determination. But he was so well-educated at the university that he could speak English with an American accent, and he got the idea of modern sciences. He called the local weather station anonymously and asked, “How severe will the winter be?” The weather station officer replied, “It will be very cold.”
The chieftain set his men to gather more firewood. The following week, he called the weather station again and asked, “How severe will this winter be?” The weather station officer replied, “It will be much colder than we had previously estimated. Everything will freeze.”
The young chieftain set his men to gather more firewood and told them to bring whatever pieces of wood they could find. A week later, he called the weather station again and asked, “Are you sure it will be a severe winter?” The weather station officer replied, “This will be the coldest winter in recorded history. All previous records will be broken.”
The chieftain was terrified. Now there was no more firewood left to cut. He asked in a muffled voice, “How are you so sure that the winter will be so severe?” The weather officer replied, “We are sure that the weather will be very cold because the tribe here is collecting firewood like crazy and its chief’s predictions have never been wrong.”
